What is Ms. Delivery?
Ms. Delivery is the Maternal Health Outreach division of Be@root, an umbrella Non-Profit Organization that supports underserved community development projects throughout South Africa, with a focus on sustainability and wellness. Ms. Delivery, as a sponsored program of Be@root, is carried out by the midwives of Eden Natural Birth, who are trained to assist women during the childbearing-year at their retreat in Hoekwil, South Africa, or in their client's own homes. Eden Natural Birth and Ms. Delivery operate in support of one another by furthering the vision of everyone having access to a positive birth experience, where their choices about their body are of paramount importance.
The mission of Ms. Delivery is to provide optimal maternal and infant healthcare and related education in rural, under resourced areas. In order to do this, Eden Natural Birth opens its doors to women who cannot afford private healthcare, and are seeking out ways to have a more empowering entrance into the world of motherhood.
The impetus behind creating Ms. Delivery is an important part of understanding why programs like these are integral to the health of a community. Women are all-to-often treated abhorrently, especially if they are young, foreign or HIV+ mothers. Nurses are often too overworked or simply disinterested in their patient’s health, and horrific stories of needless injury or death are shockingly common. Many women seek out Ms. Delivery because they are so terrified of returning to a hospital where they suffered blatant abuses and are looking for any alternative to the public healthcare system. It is our belief that they also have the right to give birth in a safe, nurturing and healthy environment.
All women, around the world, are deserving of care that is in line with the MotherBaby Friendly Initiative that sets guidelines for professionals in maternity care to respect the rights and desires of women and their babies at this vulnerable time. Having a negative birth experience can have long term implications for the relationship between the mother and child as well as their psychological wellbeing.
It is in this light that Ms. Delivery has begun to tackle the massive undertaking that is changing birth stories, one woman at a time, from those of fear and pain to empowerment and positivity. In order to do so, the funds to cover prenatal care, labor and birth as well as postnatal care must be raised from socially conscious individuals who can see the direct correlation between the health of a community and the health of the mothers of that community while they go through the incredibly transformative experience of bringing new life into the world.
